She answered that question every day serving her country as a Captain in the Air Force and wife of a fighter pilot and Commandant of the Weapons School at Nellis AFB in Las Vegas.
Even after her transition to life as a civilian orthodontist, mother of three, and New Adult/Young Adult author, Jamie continues to fight and yes, she still fights like a girl, just with a different weapon. Now, Jamie fights to empower women through her writing – especially women in the military confronted by what it means to “fight like a girl.”
In her new book, Call Sign KARMA, Jamie brings the G-forces of Air Force piloting to the page. What better way to prove the courage and resiliency of female fighters than with a modern-day Top Gun led by a strong female fighter pilot?
In order to defend the legacy of her brother who died in a fighter jet accident, Call Sign’s heroine Tinklee Pinkerton must also fight to prove herself in a man’s world. She’s been chosen as the first woman to fly the Air Force F-35. It’s not just a monster of a machine in its own right, it’s the very plane that killed Tink’s brother. As she takes to the air, Tink battles grief and anyone who questions her abilities with a fierce determination to succeed.
Call Sign KARMA is about planes and pilots and military mechanics, but it’s also about love between two people, love between comrades in arms, and love of service before self. It’s about fighting because sometimes that’s just what you have to do for what you love – a sentiment that drove many of the WASP.
For Jamie, the call to write has always been a powerful one: “I have always been drawn to strong female role models, mentors, as well as fictional characters. They’ve inspired me to fight for what I believe in, to never give up and to not let anyone ever tell me that I couldn’t do something because I’m a girl.”
Like Tink, Jamie proves through her work what fighting like a girl really means: fighting for what you believe in. Whether it’s with a plane or a pen, Jamie aims to serve her country by connecting with others and inspiring them to be strong and proud.
On FlyGirls the Series, Jamie says, “Being a veteran and spouse in the military community for so long, I have come to know many great female pilots. I am thrilled there is a series that will highlight their history and accomplishments!”
