Isabelle Garrett McCrae was born in 1912 in Rocky Ford, Colorado. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and as a child, was fascinated by flying. It was after she'd flown as a passenger in a plane piloted by a childhood friend that she realized her dream.

Isabelle flew her own Piper Comanche 260 until the age 87 when she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She passed away in 1999.

Here is an excerpt of her experiences, in her own words. We thank her son Mike McCrae for sharing this with us...

  1. Mike,Wow, your Mom was quite the "hero". No wonder you bought, flew and kept your T-6 all these years (Ed told me). I found the part about your Mom being transferred to the the Air Transport Command quite interesting because my dad was a pilot in the ATC. I still have (and wear on occasion) his wings. I'll never forget the times we flew formation in those old birds up to Reno.Fondly,Sue Kelley (Haines)Phoenix

  2. Incredible story! Mike - It would appear that you were born with aviation fuel in your veins.
