by Christina Leigh Burns

Enjoy this treasure! Bob Hope's Christmas Eve Radio Special, which was transmitted to troops worldwide from Hollywood, California on December 24, 1943.

For sixty years, beginning in 1941, Bob Hope brought his variety show to the troops at home and in war zones overseas. The USO was close to his heart and he performed in 200 shows in his lifetime.

In October 1997, House Joint Resolution 75 was signed into law giving Bob Hope honorary veteran status for his years dedicated to his humanitarian work with the US military.

"Believe me when I say that laughter up at the front lines is a very precious thing—precious to those grand guys who are giving and taking the awful business that goes on there. . . . There’s a lump the size of Grant’s Tomb in your throat when they come up to you and shake your hand and mumble “Thanks.” Imagine those guys thanking me! Look what they’re doin’ for me. And for you."  --Bob Hope, 1944
