From the Director: A promise to Violet (1917-2011). WASP, 43-4
As a young girl Violet would watch the hawks fly over her family's farm in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She would race on her bicycle down the dirt road to try and keep up with them. Later during WW II, she would fly Spitfires for the WASP. The child that wanted to fly became the woman now that would soar.
Many, many years ago, when I first met Violet, she expressed her wish to have the story of the WASP be told. She wanted every young girl to know that they could be anything they wanted be. They only had to try.
I made a promise to Violet that I would do everything I could to get the WASP story told. Narrative storytelling can humanize a time in history that makes that era come alive. Creating memorable characters and experiencing their life through their eyes is palpable storytelling. This is what we want for FlyGirls. The development of this ten part dramatic mini-series will be a promise fulfilled.
